This Year's Model Updates:

America's best-selling minivan is all new for 2001, with many industry-first features including a power rear tailgate, a power sliding door obstacle detection system, and a removable and powered center console, and a pop-up rear cargo organizer, all residing under sleek new sheetmetal.

Pros:
  • Lots of new options, torquey engines, car-like driving characteristics, improved safety features.
Cons:
  • Still no stowable third seat, gets pricey when options are added, legroom in second-row seats.

  • So..so minivan - 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan

This car was a year old when I purchased it. It is great on long drives because of the room. I have several dents in the rear bumper because of the difficulty to see behind. The car was good for the first couple of years, but now is experiencing major mechanical problems. I wish the seats would "stow and go" easier. The third row is a pain to remove.

  • Very surprised new minivan owner - 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan

Great ride & fun to drive. I thought that I would never own a minivan. But, having two kids I knew that I needed a minivan. After shopping for a while we bought it and I wish I would have gotten one a long time ago! Affordable.

  • "Sport" model for a reason - 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan

We purchased our 01 GC Sport in the latter part of 2000 out of a 96 Sable wagon. We love our van. Not only can we tow our 20 ft bow rider with it, the cargo room when all the seats are removed is like a Uhaul. The engine has power and sounds throaty like a Durango or even a Charger. Reaching highway speeds is no problem for the peppy little 3.3 liter V6 even with 7 adult sized passengers. We had one power window motor die out on our son while he was at a car wash (horrible scenario) and once needed a new starter. All of which were not ridiculously pricy but, repairing anything on a Chrysler product is thankfully never a "remortgage the house" situation. Engine smokes my sisters Odyssey.

This is a nice family car. Roomier than other mini-vans.

I bought it used 2001-39000ml for $12,500 with new tires and keyless entry. Not bad at all. The 3.3L engine has very good pick-up but it slows down if you really try to rev it up. I average 18MPG. This could be better! A hybrid engine or turbo diesel would help quite a bit on the fuel economy side. Road handling is surprisingly good, car like, but in a sense, driving its better because of the nice view from “up there”. Comfort: low engine/aerodynamic noise (even if they cheap out on engine sound shielding), smooth shifting. Driver seat feels a little cheap. Sometimes the door armrest squeaks. Internal space is gorgeous, kids love it.

  • Appreciate my van! - 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan

I simply love this van! I bought the van to replace an older Dodge Caravan that had over 300k miles and was on its last tire! The only thing I have replaced is a brake line that rusted out. I live near the ocean so I run through a lot of salt water which was probably a contributing factor. I decided to buy new headlights ($80) because they did fog and visibility was a concern. The automatic door on the pass. side works when it wants to, but I dont mind walking around to open it! I dont have very high expectations for a vehicle that is 9 years old, but this van exceeds all that I do have. I never worry about sitting on the side of the road. Excellent family van.

  • 4th one, LAST one! - 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan
    By -

I bought my first in 86, second in 90, 3rd in 96, this one in 2001. Traded last one in w/112K on it, transmission starting to slip. This one is a Sport FWD model. Has 60000K on it, 98% are highway miles. Front end is "shot".....needs new struts and ball joints. You should hear and feel the thing ride. Its horrible and obvious to anyone. Dealer refuses to even acknowledge this.My own mechanic (who is known in town as GOOD and trustworthy!) gave me the bad news. Thats it.....I am going out to buy Japanese...Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey. They lost a loyal customer - who isnt stupid.

  • Unreliable long-term - 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan
    By -

Looking to buy a minivan (Not Dodge!!!!) Kept current Caravan in excellent condition & purchased ext. warranty. Transmission blew @ 76,000 miles (- $2600); A/C compressor & evaporator went at 102,000 miles (-$2700) of course after attaining full "paid off" ownership. Seemed like a "timed" bomb. Total cost of 7-yr old van after initial investment = $27,000. Not reliable for long-term ownership. Dodge servicing in South FL. (used several) was not satisfactory as well.

  • Dont buy a Dodge - 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan
    By -

In the first year- the drivers side windshield wiper arm fell off during rainstorm- passenger side windshield stopped working during snowstorm and the rear wiper moter burned out. With no lumbar support the drivers seat is very uncomfortable. Design is boring and lacks flair!! Only gets about 20mpg and stickers for $27,000!! Go figure!!

  • GOOD SO FAR W/MINOR PROBLEMS - 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan
    By -

This is a pretty good van overall but I had a water leak around the passenger windshield which the dealer finally fixed after 3 attempts. The dealer did not replace the carpet, which I requested. NOT VERY HAPPY WITH DODGE ABOUT THAT ISSUE!!!!! I also had a dash lighting issue. The fix was just resetting the computer. All in all it is a nice VAN but DODGE needs to do better with CUSTOMER SUPPORT. One other thing I have a 99 Dodge Dakota which also had a water leak at almost the same place. NOT GOOD!!!
